Chottanikkara temple, Kerala Tourist Spot

Chottanikkara is famous for the temple of the powerful Goddess Raja Rajeswari. A large number of people with mental afflictions find relief and cure after worship in the temple, observing certain religious disciplines for specified periods. On a tree growing in the premises of the temple, one can see hundreds of nails struck on it by the afflicted using their own heads like a hammer in a state of trance. The temple authorities provide accommodation in the temple for pilgrims.

Kaladi: Kerala can be proud of this picturesque village, 13 kms. from Alwaye on the bank of the river Peiyar. Here was born Sri Sankaracharya, one of the greatest philosophers of the world. The great exponent of Advaita philosophy Sri Sankara has left a lasting influence on Indian life and culture.

Kayamkulam town is the mid point in the Trivandum-ernakulam bus route. Krishnapuram Palace near Kayamkulam built by King Mathanada Varma in 1729-58 is a place of great attraction to historians, art lovers and tourists. Here is one of the biggest wall paintings on the mythological story - Gajendra Moksha. The palace is preserved as a monument by the Archaeological Department of the Government of India. Day by day the number of tourists visiting this place is increasing. The Syrian Christian Church which was founded in AD 829 is also another attraction.

In Kerala, about 10 kms. from Chengannur, on the bank of the river Pampa, is Aranmula, a holy place with a temple dedicated to Parthasarathi. Parthasarathi means the Charioteer of Parthan or Arjuna. Lord Krishna is the Charioteer, thus the Supreme Guiding Spirit in every man is symbolized by the beautiful idol of Sri Krishna.

A very colorful snake boat race is held here every year as an age-old religious festival. Aranmula is also famous for a special mirror made of bell metal, one of the rare curious coveted by all tourists. Its making has been a traditional secret of a certain family in Aranmula. This is one of the important tourist place in Kerala.

Neendakara is 10 kms. away from Quilon on the Quilon-Allepey road. The place has unique natural setting with the long Neendakara bridge spanning the Ashtamudi lake, with fishing boats and the vast lake and the sea separated by sand bed called Ashi, Neenadakara is a fishing center. The Indo-Norwegian Project initiated in 1953 modernized the fishing Industry. This is a beautiful place, everybody enjoyed the stay here. This is one of important place in Kerala.

Quilon - Tourist Spot

In Kerala, Quilon is nearly 60 kms. from Trivandrum and situated in the banks of Ashtamudi lake. The town has several old temples, churches, mosques and the surrounding areas have great scenic charm. A variety of flowers, shrubs and trees grow on its banks and are reflected in the deep blue waters. There is a boat club in the Ashtamudi lake. Prominent on its shores are the Thevally Palace and the Government House. Luxuriant groves of coconut palms greet one every where as the boat moves through lakes, lagoons and canals.

The Thirumullavaram beach near Quilon is a beauty spot and an ideal place for sea-bath and it is best place for morning walks. This is a very beautiful picnic spot and it is very well connected with bus facilities.

Mannadi Velu Thampi Memorial - Tourist Spot

Mannadi: This village is at Kerala. In Kerala's freedom struggle, this is a village of utomost importance, for Velu Thampi, the Dewan of erstwhile Travancore (1801-1809) attained martyrdom here is his fight against the British to free Travancore from British suzerainty.

At the place of his martyrdom, there is a memorial called Velu Thamp Memorial Kalari. A sword is kept within it to remind the people of his great self-sacrifice. To the people of Mannadi, February 10 is a day of great importance - the day of martyrdom of that gallant hero of Kerala. This is one of the important tourist spot in Kerala.

Ezhimala or Mount Eli: Ezhimala is about 25 kms. north of Cannanore town is a strange landscape in Kerala. It is as high mountainous area just on the brink of the sea. It was popular landmark of ancient foreign sailors. Plans are afoot to develop this unique place into a major a tourist center.

During Sang period Ezhimala was H.Q. of Ezhimala Radi. In old literatures, Ezhimala is referred as Ezhil Malai i.e. beautiful hill. Later the name changed as Ezhimala. Ezhimala’s beautiful beach is the major tourist attraction. The ancient mosque, stone pillars and the rare medicinal herbs are seen near the Hills. You can see the beautiful scene of jumping Dolphins in the Ezhimala beaches is another tourist attraction.

The water falls in Kerala is the best place to enjoy. The waterfalls here are Athirappally, Vazhachal, Attukal, Cheeyappara, Thommankuth, Palaruvi, etc.

At the entrance of Sholayar range the serene waterfall Athirappally is a beautiful sight you can see here. Athirappally is a famous shooting spot. Many Directors choose this place i.e. such a beautiful place. Many buses are running from Chalakudy to Athirappally.

Attukal:
This is wonderful waterfall located near Munnar. This is suitable for trekkers.

Thommankuth:
This is a beauty of nature and you can watch the many waterfalls and rolling hills here. This place is 75 km. from Cochin. You can stay here in the Hotels at Thodupuzha. From Thodupuzha this waterfall is around 15 kms. This is a superb place for nature lovers.

Guruvayur Temple

Every year thousands of pilgrims visiting Guruvayur from all over India. Guruvayur is famous for Shri Krishna Temple. Here the God’s name is Guruvayurappan. To get the blessings of Lord Krishna, a large number of brides and bridegrooms and newly wedded couple visits here. The temple opened between 3.00 and 12.30 in the F.N. and in the A.N. 5.00 and 9.00 hours. Only Hindu members are allowed here. You can watch the grandeur and charm of 44 elephants in the Punnathur Kotta.


If you want to visit this sacred place you can go by air/rail/bus. The nearest Air pot is Cochin. The nearest Railway Station is Trichur. Many buses are going to Guruvayur – Kerala Transport Corporation is operating many buses from major places in Kerala. You can stay here in the luxurious hotels or Budget hotels. All are available. Best time to visit Guruvayur is between October and March.

In Kerala another important place to visit is Palakkad. At the foot of Western Ghats, the famous Palakkad is situated with dams, wild life sanctuaries, rare animals, forests, historical monuments. Some of the important places to visit here are listed below.

Palakkad Fort: This Fort is situated in the Palakkad town was constructed by Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan in 1766. In 1790 this Fort was modified by the British and now preserved and protected by Government of India Department – Archaeological Survey of India. This beautiful fort was constructed using Granite.

Malampuzha Garden: This garden is situated 10 km. away from Palakkad. This is a must see place here. You can go by bus from Palakkad. Here you can watch aquarium, different varieties of blooming flowers, lawns, pools and fountains. You cannot forget the Japanese style landscape here. From the Telescopic Tower here you can have a look upto 40 miles. The Ropeway here gives you a memorable journey in the air for about 20 minutes across the garden. The Rock Garden here is also a beautiful site to visit and you can have many thrilling rides here.

Kerala’s best Hill Station is Munnar. It situated in the altitude between 1500m to 2695 m in Idduki District in the Western Ghats. Munnar means (Three-Munu / River – Aaru) i.e. the rivers are Nallathanni, Muthirappuzha, Kundaly. Kerala is called “God’s own County”; Munnar is called as Lovers’ Paradise. You can love to see the green hill slopes, waterfalls, lakes, valleys and the tea plantation estates.

The tallest peak in South India Anaimudi Hill is here and you can enjoy your trip by going to Erivakulam Wildlife Sanctuary. It is best destination for adventure tourists. Another Tourist attraction place in Kerala is Marai Beach. It is very near to Alleppey and away from Cochin just 60 kms. The climate here is humid and warm. the best months to viist Marai Beach is between December and March.

Maraikulam from this word Marai arrives. This is peaceful land you can relax. Here people live peacefully and they live simply. Men go to sea every day and sell the daily catch and live happily. You can enjoy the people’s hospitality here.

Other attractions are Kumarakom Bird Santuary, Ayurvedic clinic, Kerala Backwater canals and Snake Boat Races.

Marai is white sand beach with coconut trees along side and lotus pond. Marai Beach Resort is famous and you can stay here at a reasonable rate (i.e. around $250) per day.

One of the most popular beaches in India is Kovalam. Travancore Kingdom discovered the Kovalam beach in 1930. After the discovery of many beaches the small village Kovalam became one of the important Tourist Spots in Kerala. The coconut trees on the beaches gives a fabulous look.

In the Malabar coast, Kovalam beaches are truly a marvelous place to enjoy. Miles of white sand and the Arabia sea palm fringed bays gives the tourist a ravishing look. You can enjoy the cool climate with gentle waves here.

Kovalam beach is crescent shaped and divided into three parts. The most popular beach is Lighthouse Beach. You can get the tasty sea food here.

You are going to Kerala during the months of August to March, the best place to visit is Alleppey (Alappuzha). Every year thousands of foreign visitors coming here. Alleppey is the best place with nature’s beauty. This place is attracted by many tourists because of the reason house boats, boat races, beaches. You can spend your holidays in the house boats by enjoying in the night by watching the sky and enjoy the climate. The temperature is between 18 and 39 C.

The important places are Alleppey Beach, Krishnapuram Palace. The old light house here is attracting large number of Tourists. Boat Races are also famous here. These are the places which fascinated me. There are many more interesting places in and around Kerala which I would discuss in the forthcoming posts.
